Local CHP traffic stops down 20 percent in 2011

California Highway Patrol officers made fewer traffic stops in Plumas County last year — almost 20 percent fewer than its three-year average.

According to 2011 statistics provided by the Quincy Area CHP, the number of accidents also fell by 8.5 percent compared to 2010.

Old hotel remnant discovered under Dame Shirley Plaza

A long-forgotten remnant of Quincy’s past could cost more than $30,000 to dig up and remove.

Crews conducting investigative core drilling at the Dame Shirley Plaza discovered a large underground tank last month.

The tank was likely used to store fuel oil for the old Quincy Hotel, which burned to the ground in 1966.

Oels takes oath at council meeting

The April 11 Portola City Council meeting began with one vacant seat — the one reserved for Councilman Dan Wilson.

His absence didn’t go unnoticed as fellow Councilman Bill Weaver questioned his whereabouts, noting that it was Wilson’s job to be there. But Wilson wouldn’t have stayed in his seat for long.

Following the public comment portion of the meeting, the consent calendar and election results certification, Phil Oels took the oath of office. Wilson’s nameplate was removed and Oels took his seat on the dais.
