Lassen Volcanic National Park will begin an eight-day helicopter operation to haul rock for the Reach the Peak Trail Rehabilitation Project. A Type I helicopter will be used to transport 2.4 million pounds of material staged in the Lassen Peak Parking Area to the Lassen Peak mountainside holding areas. The rock will be used to build steps and retaining walls. Park and California Conservation Corps trail crews have steadily worked selecting the rock from Hat Creek Quarry over the past month.
Railroad Days will kick off tomorrow night with a Community Appreciation Picnic hosted by the city of Portola. Portola's city council and planning commission members will barbecue dinner and serve the community a free picnic meal at City Park at 6 p.m.
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has
recommended that Plumas-Eureka State Park Campground be temporarily closed due to an
elevated risk of the plague. The level of risk was determined after CDPH sampled the park
following the discovery of a plague-positive dead rodent.
Railroad Company Settles Claims Arising from Forest Fire in the Plumas National Forest
United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced Monday that Union Pacific Railroad Company has paid $17,364,719.61 in damages caused by the "Rich Fire" of 2008.
The fire ignited on July 29, 2008, in the Feather River Canyon of the Plumas National Forest, between Oroville and Quincy. The fire spread rapidly, and area homes were evacuated.
A 16-year-old Reno resident drowned in Lower Bucks Lake Sunday, Aug. 15, the third drowning this summer in the county. All the victims were under 30.
The Plumas County Sheriff's Office dispatch center received a call from Bucks Lake Fire reporting a possible drowning victim near Camp Timber Wolf around noon.
