Relief fund established for Chester fire victims

The Lake Almanor Community Foundation has stepped forward to establish a disaster relief fund to assist the two Chester families who lost their homes and possessions to the Dec. 3 fire on First Avenue.

The fire, which originated in the garage of the 259 First Ave. residence of Richard Lebert at approximately 1:28 a.m., spread very quickly to the 265 First Ave. residence of Nick Bagby. The fire consumed most of the two structures and all personal property belonging to the adults and their children.

Proposed MediCal cuts may push hospitals to the brink and displace seniors

The stagnant housing economy, which has resulted in reassessed home values throughout Plumas County and lower property tax revenue, is financially distressing at the very least to struggling district hospitals.

Compounded with the proposed reduction in MediCal reimbursements for patient care, specifically those in distinct part skilled nursing facilities, this could be construed as a formula for failure.

Portola hospital arsonist and two others sentenced

The man convicted of burning down the historic Western Pacific Hospital in Portola will be spending a year in jail.

Eighteen-year-old Harold Ellis Johnson, of Portola, was sentenced Dec. 1 to one year in the county jail and five years of formal probation.

A collision between a California Highway Patrol car and a garbage truck sent three men to the hospital with minor injuries Thursday, Dec. 8.

All three were checked out at Eastern Plumas Health Care and released following the 10 a.m. crash on Highway 70 near Beckwourth.

The accident was still under investigation as of Friday, Dec. 9, when the CHP allowed a Feather Publishing reporter to view the in-car video showing the moments leading up to the collision.

County asks for Feinstein’s help in Forest Service dispute

The county has come to the aid of a Greenville logger in his battle against the Forest Service.

The Plumas County Board of Supervisors sent a letter to Sen. Dianne Feinstein asking her to intervene in a dispute over a 2009 timber sale.

Local woman loses baby in roll-over accident on Highway 89

A Crescent Mills woman has lost her baby following a vehicle accident this weekend.

At 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 11, Windy Achor, 26, was driving a 1990 Toyota pickup southbound on Highway 89 approaching Pioneer Road at a stated speed of 40 – 45 mph.
