   These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Image makeover needed: In the soon-to-be-released grand jury report, the jurors said the county’s Alcohol and Drug and Mental Health departments are suffering from a poor public image.
  • Help at the jail: The Board of Supervisors approved the sheriff’s request to hire four corrections officers, but not before reminding him the county is facing a $3 million budget problem.
  • Water disaster?: The state has already enacted emergency conservation measures. The county is thinking about declaring a local disaster as well.

Plumas-Eureka on state park closure list

Plumas County’s only state park, Plumas-Eureka State Park (PESP), is on the list of 70 parks to be closed for the next two fiscal years, California State Parks announced today.

The PESP closure is unlikely to have much of an effect this summer because a scheduled hazardous materials cleanup meant most facilities would be closed anyway, said Matt Green, acting district superintendent for the park agency’s Sierra District.

Sheriff draws crowd at Basin Tea Party meeting

Plumas County Sheriff Greg Hagwood was the keynote speaker at the Almanor Tea Party meeting May 4 at the Chester Memorial Hall.

During this presentation he took his message beyond access to the forests to the balance of power between the people and the federal government.

Judge denies county’s motion to reconsider Cunan case

In scathing terms, a judge has rejected the county’s request for reconsideration of its lawsuit against former District Attorney Jeff Cunan.

In comments during a hearing April 28, visiting Judge Ersel Edwards called County Counsel Craig Settlemire “unprofessional,” suggested he had “other motivations” and chastised him for not doing his due diligence.

Refuges, to have or not? That is the question

If public opinion counts when it comes to the actions of a public agency like the California Department of Fish and Game, then the state game refuges will remain closed to hunting.

In a nine-page public comment against elimination of the refuge status, Senior Attorney Ralph Henry of the Humane Society of the United States and the Fund for Animals blasted the department over several aspects of its proposal.

Getting the Moonlight cut up and out

After almost four years of frustration, local loggers and helicopter loggers are finally salvaging some value out of the big timber standing dead in the most severely burned areas of the 2007 Moonlight Fire.

Of special significance is the 40-year anniversary of the first-ever U.S. helicopter logging job, which was done in the same area.

Homicide victim identified

A man whose body was discovered in a motor home April 29 in Plumas County was identified Friday as Brian Joseph Graves, 49.

According to the Yuba City Appeal-Democrat and the Sutter County Sheriff’s Office, Graves was a Marysville-area transient.

Ricky Ray Kingsley, 53, has been charged with murder in Graves’ death.
