Preliminary hearing setting conference rescheduled again in murder case

After the defense team cited scheduling conflicts and new information regarding the case, a preliminary hearing setting conference has been rescheduled, again, for a man and woman charged with killing an off-duty Susanville police officer. 

Joanna Lynne McElrath, 36, and Robin Glen James, 46, appeared in Lassen Superior Court Wednesday, March 9, for their second preliminary hearing setting conference. They are being held in custody without bail for the alleged murder of Robert McElrath, Joanna's husband.

Plumas Arts invites you to savor the Taste of Plumas

The fifth annual Taste of Plumas is one of the most anticipated events of the season. It will be held Saturday, April 9, at the Plumas-Sierra County Fairgrounds. The tastings begin at 5:30 p.m.

The staff at Plumas Arts reports that there are more restaurants and more wineries participating this year than ever before. The admission price remains at the 2007 and 2008 levels.

DA’s office lays off grant-funded position

At a meeting Tuesday, March 8, the Plumas County Board of Supervisors approved the layoff of a position that split time between investigative and victim/witness work in the District Attorney’s (DA) Office.

DA David Hollister recommended the move, informing the supervisors several grants that used to fund the position disappeared over the last two years.

Local tourism number up, reports visitors bureau

Plumas County Visitors Bureau Director Suzi Brakken delivered good news about local tourism to the Board of Supervisors at a meeting Tuesday, March 1.

Brakken reported transient occupancy tax (TOT) revenue and walk-in visits to her department were both up by 4 percent, while e-mail and phone calls to her agency were up 10 percent and visits to the visitors bureau website were up 17 percent compared to the prior year.

County wants coalition to tackle forest travel plan

The Plumas County Board of Supervisors (BOS) approved a letter at a meeting Tuesday, March 8, inviting other counties “to form a coalition to explore legal and political remedies” to the Forest Service’s new travel management plans.

At the same meeting, Sierra Access Coalition (SAC) Executive Director Corky Lazzarino vowed to challenge the Plumas National Forest’s (PNF) travel management plan in court.

Plumas braces for shift of inmates from prison to jail

New Plumas County District Attorney (DA) David Hollister explained some of the unique challenges that would be facing his office in the future, during a recent Board of Supervisors meeting.

The DA said new Gov. Jerry Brown supported former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's plan to shift some of the state prison burden back to the counties.
