Community steps up to help burn victims

The Barclays are slowly recuperating after the loss of their Portola home and a family member in a fire Dec. 21. With four of the children in the Shriner’s burn center and the parents in the UC Davis burn center, it will take time to heal physically and emotionally.

The burns are not life-threatening but require a lot of cleaning and dressing and are very painful. Makiah Barclay, 9, has required skin grafting.

Dramatic flame as Post Office burns off propane

Traffic on Lawrence Street slowed to a crawl and pedestrians stopped to ask questions. The law recently changed to require different regulators and valves on propane tanks. Although the tank was “empty,” residual propane in it needed to be removed before the regulator could be changed, a process expected to take about 25 minutes.

Dye pack turns Stover Creek neon green

A sea-dye packet caused confusion and alarm Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2011, as it turned the normally pristine waters of Stover Creek in Chester a brilliant shade of fluorescent green.

State says it will appeal MediCal injunction

The California Department of Health Services announced today that it would “immediately” appeal the preliminary injunction halting MediCal cuts to skilled nursing facilities. The state said it would seek a stay of the injunction from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
