Greenville High School plans to once again hold an alumni football game. The game is scheduled for Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. This is one week after GHS’ football team finishes its season.
The game is an opportunity for past players to play out on the field again. Last year’s game proved a successful fundraiser for the high school as well.
The game allows unique opportunities: Past players reunite; players of different generations play each other; fathers and sons play together on the same team.
Though the game is scheduled to match up GHS players against other GHS players, previous players from throughout Plumas County and surrounding areas are welcome to sign up and play. Currently, players from Westwood and Chester plan to join GHS alumni in the game.
Organizer Kaley Bentz has high hopes for this year’s alumni game.
“Organizing this has been fun,” said Bentz, “but it has involved a lot of work.”
Though the game is scheduled to take place Nov. 3, the number of players who sign up will be the ultimate determinant on whether it will take place at all.
Alumni Football USA is the company that plans to hold the game. The event won’t run, however, unless 40 players are signed up by Oct. 3. So far 30 players have committed.
“A lot of guys will hesitate signing up,” Bentz explained. “They’ll think it sounds like fun, but debate whether it will happen or not. If they don’t hesitate, then it will happen. If they keep hesitating, though, it might not happen.”
Besides needing 40 players to hold the event, Bentz talked about multiple reasons more players are needed.
“A lot of us are old, fat and out of shape now,” said Bentz. “It’s hard to play the whole game, so we need more people to sign up. We need at least 20 people on each team.”
The cost to sign up is $95, which goes toward insurance, lighting and filming costs. Players will receive a T-shirt and a DVD of the game. The game will be filmed by Alumni Football USA’s professional film crew. Samples of filming are available to view at their website.
Alumni Football USA will provide equipment for the game as well. The equipment includes helmets, shoulder pads and jerseys.
Half of pre-game ticket sales will go directly to the high school. Tickets bought at the gate support Alumni Football USA. Tickets go on sale Oct. 10 and will be available at Evergreen Market and alumnifootballusa.com.
GHS will also have the opportunity to fundraise during the event.
A practice will be held the night before the game, Nov. 2, at 7 p.m. under the lights. A small crowd gathered for the practice last year and the evening ended up being an event itself. There will also be a walk-through practice the day of the game at 10 a.m.
Those interested in playing in the Greenville alumni game should call Bentz at 228-9390 as soon as possible.
There is also a Quincy versus Portola alumni game being planned. Those interested in playing in this game should contact C.B. Brown at 249-0541.
