The long wait for a permanent county librarian is over. Lynn Sheehy, former Lassen County librarian, took over the helm Sept. 17.

“I love to just sit in libraries,” Sheehy said. “I loved the smell of books as a little girl.”

As county librarian, Sheehy oversees the staff of all county library branches: Portola, Greenville, Chester and Quincy, where she is based and works 30 hours a week.

She is also responsible for managing the Plumas County Literacy Program, which gives a second chance to the incarcerated population and their families by helping them learn to read, improve reading, gain comprehension and “learn to make friends with books.”

Sheehy credits libraries for being at the top of the information age, providing online catalogs, free Internet access and the ability to order books and videos through an interlibrary loan system.

She said she would like to write grants to obtain much-needed funds for the library.

Sheehy has a strong educational background, with a Bachelor of Arts in history from Hastings College, in Nebraska, a professional teaching credential in social science from Cal State Chico, Master of Arts in humanities from Cal State Dominguez Hills and a master’s degree in library and information science from San Jose State.

In addition to her library work in Lassen County, Sheehy has also taught college and high school social studies courses.

Sheehy lives with her husband Doug, a local musician and music teacher at Lassen College. She plays piano and trombone, and also loves to knit.

The Sheehys have three grown children and will divide their time between Butterfly Valley and Susanville.

The library website offers links for legal, health and local resources, jobs and business, surfing for kids, books and reading, and sites in Spanish.

Check them out at plumascounty.us. Scroll over Departments, then G – Z. Then click Library.
