A huge boulder loosened by heavy rains was struck by an eastbound Western Pacific train near Pulga in the Feather River Canyon this morning causing the train to plunge over a 450 foot embankment into the Feather River. The engineer and a railroad fireman were killed.
Official abandonment of the Indian Valley Railroad from Paxton to Crescent Mills has been authorized by the Interstate Commerce Department.
50 YEARS AGO.........1962
Plumas County joined in the statewide vote Tuesday in which Edmund G. βPatβ Brown defeated Richard Nixon for Governor of California. Locally, Quincy businessman Joe Crivello defeated Plumas County Board of Supervisor incumbent Robin Jeskey, Quincy rancher.

Mike Jamison, Plumas County Deputy District Attorney resigned effective in December, after serving that position since 1985.
The proposed Feather River College de-annexation from the Oakland-based Peralta College District will go before the state Community College Board of Governors in December.
10 YEARS AGO...........2002
Nearly two-thirds of registered Pumas County voters turned out Tuesday and most voted Republican but to no avail as California elected Gray Davis for Governor. The Feather River Canyon community of Twain recorded the highest voter turnout β 89.47 per cent, while the southern part of Plumas County had the lowest voter turnout β 47.95 per cent.
