Highway 70 in the Feather RIver Canyon is now open.
Highway 70 remained closed in the Feather River canyon Friday afternoon because of water on the roadway, according to Caltrans.
The highway was closed from 1.2 miles west of Jarbo Gap in Butte County to the Greenville Wye in Plumas County.
According to Caltrans spokesperson Lori Mathiesen, the road was closed to allow Caltrans crews to remove storm debris from culverts.
The debris, which accumulated during the heavy rainfall, was causing water to cover the road near Rodgers Flat between Belden and Tobin.
Traffic has been halted in both directions. Mathiesen said Caltrans was not able to determine how long the road would be closed.
Mathiesen said a contractor is working with Caltrans to remove the debris from a plugged culvert at Paul’s Creek.
She said the rain has caused a few minor slides from the hillsides along the canyon.
“It’s just the normal debris that usually falls during a storm,” Mathiesen said.
The forecast is calling for heavy rain to continue through the weekend.

Dammit this doesn't allow much room for comments so I have to make multiple short posts.
The Weather Channel showed a long line of storms from the SW coming yet the Butte County TV and Radio stations continued to downplay the storms.
While Dad was driving BEFORE the floods hit water was already lapping up to the road and there was huge waterfalls over the sides.
Luckily we had all our furniture up here in Oregon by then.
Even when I am down to 9 characters left it still thinks my comments are too long.
It would be VERY helpful to have longer limits like 500.
Highway 70 when it's raining hard can have huge boulders come down the waterfalls at any time.
the canyon is currently closed, hopefully not for too long. you should see the river and the waterfalls! wooeee!
