Scoping Notice

Plumas National Forest
Beckwourth Ranger District
The USDA Forest Service Plumas National Forest, Beckwourth Ranger District will prepare an Environmental Assessment (EA) to reduce fuel loading within the Wildland Urban Interface surrounding the communities of Portola, Delleker, Mabie, Lake Davis Highlands and surrounding stands. In addition to reducing wildfire risk stands would be treated to promote healthy, diverse, fire-resilient forest structures, contribute to the economic health and stability of local rural communities in the northern Sierra Nevada, and provide necessary road access needed to meet project objectives while reducing transportation system effects. The Hayden Project is proposing treatments on approximately 4,592 acres. The proposed activities include the use of ground-based logging systems and underburning in order to meet the purpose and needs. This could also involve post-harvest underburning, pile burning, mastication, grapple piling and hand thinning to meet fuels objectives. Temporary road construction, reconstruction and decommissioning would involve the use of heavy equipment.

The project area is located northeast of the communities of Delleker and Portola within the Beckwourth Ranger District of the Plumas National Forest, Plumas County; the legal description is T 22 N., R13 E, Sections 4, 5, 31-33, 36, T23 N. R12E, Sections 26, T. 23 N, R. 13 E, Sections 13, 16 - 22, 24, 25, 27, 29, 30, 34: Mount Diablo Meridian.
Our desire is to receive comments or other expressions of interest on the merits of the proposed action, as well as comments that address errors, misinformation, or information that has been omitted. Public questions and comments regarding this proposal are an integral part of this environmental analysis process. Comments will be used to identify issues and develop alternatives to the proposed action. To assist the Forest Service in identifying and considering issues and concerns on the proposed action, comments should be as specific as possible. A copy of the proposed action and/or a summary of the proposed action will be mailed to adjacent landowners, as well as to those people and organizations that have indicated a specific interest in the Hayden Project.
