From ethics to Excel spreadsheets, special districts want more training for their board members and their staffs.
Nearly 50 representatives attended an ethics training offered by the Plumas County Special District Association last December and now the group is considering making it a biannual event.
Many of those who attended the quarterly special district association meeting Feb. 20 said they appreciated the training, noting that it far surpassed online courses offered on the subject.
David Edwards, the general manager of the East Quincy Services District, said that online course content that he has seen hasn’t changed in the past five years.
At the association-sponsored training, attendees learned from two attorneys who represent services districts.
Jane Braxton Little, representing the Indian Valley Community Services District, attended the training and said she appreciated the training and found the opportunity to interact with her counterparts valuable.
During the Feb. 20 meeting, Angela Wendele, of the California Rural Water Association, talked about a variety of trainings that her organization offers that would help boards, administrative staff and field operators.
Because her organization represents water and wastewater systems, it offers a number of courses for state-required certifications.
A new course is focused on water system security.
Juli Thompson, secretary of the special district association, said she was very excited about the training. As a former general manager as well as secretary of a community services district, she knows what information is needed in the field.
“This is highly beneficial to small districts,” Braxton Little said.
New website
The special district association is also unveiling a new web site: pc-sda.org. The site will contain a list of all special districts, contact information, resource links, training updates and other information.
The next meeting of the special district association is planned for May 15 at 1 p.m. in the Quincy library meeting room.
