Quincy named one of America’s coolest small towns

Plumas County received some free worldwide publicity from an unlikely source last week.

Yahoo Travel named Quincy one of the 10 coolest small towns in America for 2013.

Quincy finished ninth among the 924 towns that received a total of 96,605 votes in the contest.

So, just what does it take to be a cool small town? According to the article on Yahoo’s website, the “small” part meant towns had to have a population under 10,000.

The “cool” part is a little more exotic. Yahoo said cool towns had to have “that indescribable something: independent shops, a sense of energy, an epic backyard, culture, delicious coffee,” according to the website’s story. The story can be found at http://yhoo.it/10nUB6v.

“Cool doesn’t necessarily mean quaint,” said the article written by Yahoo’s Budget Travel staff. “We wanted towns with an edge and a heart.”

The list of 924 contenders was narrowed to 15, based on votes and comments submitted to Yahoo. Quincy was the only California town to make the cut.

While Quincy had a strong surge of votes from Plumas County, the short stories about each of the winning towns came from Yahoo’s staff.

According to the story, Lititz, Penn., was named America’s coolest small town.

Rounding out the top 10 were: Bay St. Louis, Miss.; Camden, Maine; Elkhart Lake, Wis.; Flagler Beach, Fla.; Glenwood Springs, Colo.; Greenville, K.Y.; Gulf Shores, Ala.; Quincy; and Watkins Glen, N.Y.

The Yahoo story said about Quincy: “This gold rush town on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, where prospectors flocked in the rush of 1849, remains a mother lode of attractions for those who like to spend their days in the wild but welcome some culture and pampering in the evening.”

Yahoo said a Quincy visitor can “take your pick of excellent pub and café fare that, true to Northern California tradition, belies its small-town locale.”
