After months of searching for the next city manager, the city of Portola may have found its perfect match in Ian Kaiser.
At its meeting April 24 the City Council voted to extend a conditional offer of employment to Kaiser during the closed session of the meeting.
According to current City Manager Leslie Tigan, they are still undergoing contract negotiations, and nothing can be officially announced just yet. However, Kaiser spent last week in Portola, meeting people and looking at houses.
Kaiser is the current town administrator of Blackville, S.C., a small town in Barnell County with a population of 3,000 people. He was originally from the Bay Area and spent a lot of time in Vallejo.
He has more than 25 years of business experience, and owned his own business for 11 years in Vallejo. He was the educational chairman for the Vallejo Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Economic Revitalization Committee for downtown Vallejo.
He received his master’s degree in public administration from Golden Gate University in 2008. In 2011 he moved to South Carolina and began his career in town administration.
Since Oct. 10, 2012, the city has been searching for a replacement for Tigan, who will be retiring at the end of June. After a long process of advertisements, promotions and application reviews, the council and city staff agreed that Kaiser would be the best fit for the job.
Tigan said they hope to negotiate a contract with him at the next City Council meeting May 8.
