Plumas County will see its fair share of tired visitors this summer now that the inaugural Sierra Nevada Relay is set to take place Aug. 24 – 25.

Teams of four to 10 will compete in a 175-mile course that goes from Donner Pass to Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Runners will pass through a variety of terrain as they make their way over mountains, through valleys and towns, and around lakes and rivers. The course goes through Tahoe, Plumas and Lassen National Forests.

Since the racers are grouped in teams, the race is non-stop and runs through the night. Warm clothes are recommended since some of the course reaches 7,000 feet in elevation.

Similarly, all teams are required to be self-supporting, meaning they need to stock their vans with water, food, first aid supplies and any amenities they want. Each runner is responsible for being familiar with his or her portion of the course, as well.

Those interested in forming a team and registering can go to and search for “Sierra Nevada Relay.” The cost to register varies by the size of the team and the time of registration.

Registration includes a tech shirt, race handbooks, a finish line meal and awards for the top three teams in each category. A detailed track map and signage will additionally be provided for each runner.

Along with the Sierra Nevada Relay, multiple running races are set to take place in Plumas County this summer. Many are run/walk events, so serious runners aren’t the only ones who can participate.

Relay for Life at the Feather River College track will start the season off June 22. In Chester, the Chester Classic Fourth of July Run/Walk is held every Independence Day.
