These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Deputy shooting fallout: The children of a Portola man who was shot and killed at Eastern Plumas Health Care last year are seeking millions of dollars in damages.
  • The trout must go: The state is planning to pull all of the brook trout out of a Plumas County lake in order to protect the yellow-legged frog.
  • Inspections delayed: Cal Fire was scheduled to begin property inspections this week, but decided to wait until the public could better understand what the inspectors are doing.

Assemblyman to speak at Memorial Day ceremony

The eighth annual Veterans Memorial Ceremony will be held Monday, May 27, at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Memorial in Dame Shirley Plaza across from the courthouse in Quincy.

There will be a variety of speakers, including Assemblyman Brian Dahle, with music provided by the Kepple sisters.

The event will also feature an invocation, flag raising and other tributes.

In 2006, Plumas County residents donated $15,000 to build the Veterans Memorial.

A stone was purchased and inscribed. Local contractors poured the foundation and erected the monument. Sidewalks were poured and a flagpole and benches were located near the monument.

Veteran Memorial Committee chairman Bob Zernich said that more work needs to be completed. To donate, call Zernich at 283-1010.

Zernich invites all county residents to attend this year’s ceremony. Refreshments will be served following the event.
