An independent and jubilant group of members of Lake Almanor Elks Lodge No. 2626 just returned home and said they are extremely pleased with the results of their trip to the Redding Elks’ Trailduster’s Chili Cook-Off in McCloud.

“We took every prize they offered,” Elk Darrell Darnell said.

He said the event offered a competition and prizes for best chili, salsa and decorations.

“We took first place and the People’s Choice award for both our chili and our salsa and first place for our decorations,” he added.

Darnell said he and his wife, Pat, wouldn’t have done nearly so well without the assistance of their daughter Leanne.

“We also had the support of our traveling group,” he said.

Traveling with the Darnells were Carl and Mary Deveny, John and Giselle Larson, Carl and Nanci Denney, Tom and Judie Denney, Jerry and Laurie Herring, Paul and Maureen Burnett, Dave and Suzanne Newman and their friends, Roger and Lani DiVirgillio.

Members of the group are also planning to travel to Coquille, Ore., on Aug. 14 for crabs and blackberry picking. Many of the Elks and their spouses will stay for one or two weeks in the area.
