Graeagle Meadows Women’s Golf Club

On July 11, the Graeagle Meadows Women’s Golf Club (GMWGC) held its annual Invitational.

This year’s theme was the Swinging Senoritas. The event began at 7 a.m. with a substantial “continental breakfast” and an 8 a.m. shotgun start, followed by a hearty quesadilla luncheon, in keeping with the theme, and awards presentation in the newly remodeled Graeagle Meadows Golf Course Restaurant.

The format was Two Best Balls of the Foursome. The Overall Invitational Champions were the team that carded the Low Gross Over-the-field score. Additionally, Low Net was paid in flights that were based on team handicaps. All play was from the Red Tees.

The Overall Low Gross winners were D. Tainor/R. Walker/K. Sipel/A. Meyer, with a team score of 171.

  The First Flight Net winners included: First place, R. Miller/S.Miller/D. Walker/T.Wolcott with a team score of 119; second place, C. Brennan/L. Cornish/N. Fackelman/B. Shadrack with a team score of 125; third place, G. Nelson/J. Lake/V. Luhring/D. Romig with a team score of 126; and, fourth place, C. Churchill/R. Honnell/J. Luckey/S. Wiese with a score of 126.

Special thanks go to Invitational Chair Karen Fraser, and assistants Bev Reynolds and Lorraine Cornish, as well as to their many volunteers from the women’s and men’s clubs and beyond, who provided a memorable Invitational experience for all. And, also to the staff of the Graeagle Meadows Golf Course and Restaurant for their work in providing a great venue and an excellent continental breakfast and luncheon. Mother Nature gets a special thanks for temperatures in the low 80’s.

As a wise person once said, if you have enjoyable partners to play with and good weather, that’s two out of three and, if good golf happens, that is a bonus.

On July 3 (on Wednesday, to accommodate the July 4 holiday), the GMWGC played a game called Crier’s Choice.

In this game each player may revert her actual score on one par three, one par four, and one par five to par for that hole, then subtract her full handicap from the total.

The field was small because of the impending Independence Day weekend in Graeagle, and all the houseguests that usually entails.

Approximately one-third of the field and of each flight finishes “in the money” each week.

In the Red Tee Division, First Flight, the winners were: first place was a three-way tie at a net score of 65 among Ellen Fearing, Alaine Flynn and Gail Nelson; and, Second Flight: first place, Renee Gielow with 63; second place, Dee Walker with 64; and third place, Giuliana Glazer with a 65.

In the Combo (Red/Green Tee) Division there was one flight, and the winners were: first place, Lorraine Cornish with a score of 60; and, second place, Carol Desmond, with a 67.

Chip-ins were made by Donna Swanson and Sue Taylor, both on hole No. 17.

  Ron Christensen won first place.

In second place was Glenn Thomas.

After the second place winner, it was pretty much the Greg Stevens show. Greg got the third place spot, came in closest to the pin on number two and scored the longest putt on hole number 5. ’Atta boy, Greg!
