These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Deputy shooting fallout: The children of a Portola man who was shot and killed at Eastern Plumas Health Care last year are seeking millions of dollars in damages.
  • The trout must go: The state is planning to pull all of the brook trout out of a Plumas County lake in order to protect the yellow-legged frog.
  • Inspections delayed: Cal Fire was scheduled to begin property inspections this week, but decided to wait until the public could better understand what the inspectors are doing.

Wallin-Reed trial begins

Feather Publishing

Trial-beginsPlumas County District Attorney David Hollister holds a solar light as he delivers opening statements to the jury Tuesday morning in the murder trial of Gregory Chad Wallin-Reed. Wallin-Reed is charged with shooting and killing 20-year-old Susanville resident Rory McGuire with an assault weapon in July 2011 near Antelope Lake.

The shooting followed an 8-mile car chase after Wallin-Reed saw McGuire and five other men taking solar lights from his property. Wallin-Reed claimed he was returning fire that came from someone in McGuire’s car. The jury is expected to hear testimony for about three weeks. The trial, which has gained national attention, is being held in Plumas County Superior Court in Quincy. Photo by Dan McDonald
