A 26-year-old Laton man died after jumping from a 50-foot cliff into the water near the dam at Little Grass Valley Reservoir on Aug. 30.

According to the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office, David Ray Stockton was pronounced dead at the scene after his body was recovered in about 10 feet of water.

The cause of death was still under investigation as of Friday, Sept. 6. The sheriff’s office reported Stockton might have died as a result of hitting the water face-first at a high speed.

Sheriff’s dispatch received a 911 call reporting a possible drowning at 3:20 p.m. Aug. 30. The caller said Stockton had jumped from the dam and had not resurfaced.

Investigators said Stockton and his two brothers had jumped off a cliff just east of the dam.

One brother jumped off first and injured his arm. He reportedly tried to warn others not to jump, but they followed behind him.

Several agencies responded to the emergency call, including search and rescue, Plumas County Boat Patrol, a Forest Service engine crew and sheriff’s deputies.

The USFS crew was the first on the scene and began searching for Stockton. They reported finding him submerged in the water and said he had been under the surface for more than 10 minutes.

Stockton was reportedly visiting family in the area.

“The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our condolences to the victim’s family,” Sheriff Greg Hagwood said.
