Feather River College jumped to an early lead and defeated visiting Merced, 41-28, last Saturday.

The Golden Eagles improved to 2-2 with the win, while Merced dropped to 1-3.

Eagles quarterback Ja’Quay Garmon was on top of his game, throwing four touchdown passes. Garmon completed 23 of 37 passes for 368 yards.

Garmon had some problems with Merced’s strong defense and was sacked six times for 51 yards lost, but he more than made up for it with his spot-on passing.

Wide receiver LaVon Pearson proved to be a powerhouse as well, receiving three TD passes. Pearson had 237 yards receiving, averaging nearly 24 yards per reception.

Farrell Victor led the Eagles in rushing with 194 yards on 19 carries, including an 8-yard touchdown.

The Eagles stayed ahead the entire game, averaging a two-touchdown lead. Pearson caught a 28-yard touchdown pass from Garmon in the first quarter to put the Eagles on the board. Five minutes later, at the start of the second quarter, Victor ran in 8 yards to put FRC up 13-0.

Merced struck back with a touchdown reception of its own, but less than a minute later the Eagles were back in the end zone. Garmon once again completed a pass to Pearson, this time for a 49-yard touchdown reception.

A few minutes later the dynamic duo of Garmon and Pearson struck again with a 45-yard touchdown connection. The Eagles were up by three touchdowns until Merced made its way into the end zone with 18 seconds left in the half.

The Eagles, ahead 27-14, took the second-half kickoff and made its way down the field, capping an eight-play drive with Ryan Hoyos running in from the 1-yard line.

Merced pushed for a comeback in the fourth quarter and had some success with two touchdowns. Garmon put a stop to any Merced dreams, however, with a 41-yard touchdown pass to Drake White to clinch an Eagles’ victory.

FRC will play its second home game in a row this Saturday at 5 p.m. The competition should be pretty evenly matched as the Eagles take on Shasta (2-2).
