For the fourth year in a row, the Feather River College volleyball team did not disappoint. The Eagles beat College of the Siskiyous and Lassen College last week to end their season with a perfect 10-0 conference record.
The wins mark the fourth year in a row for several achievements by the volleyball team. This is the fourth year in a row FRC went undefeated in conference, won the Golden Valley Conference title and won more than 20 games for the season.
“To me, this year has meant the most,” said FRC’s coach, Sarah Ritchie. “We lost nine sophomores from last year and have a very young team this year. We were the underdog. This team has improved more than any other I’ve seen.”
The Eagles ended their regular season with a three-game win at Lassen College on Nov. 15. Two days prior, FRC won its 20th match of the season against Siskiyous in three games.
The sweep against Siskiyous was relatively easy for the Eagles, with scores of 25-12, 25-13 and 25-12. The impressive serving from FRC is what sped the win up.
Combined, FRC served 10 aces. Jessica Jackson served four, Nina Holmes and Morgen Wohrle served two apiece and Marinda Thomas and Kelsey Phipps each served one. Phipps led the team in attacking with 16 kills. Stephanie Ovitz was right behind Phipps with 12 kills.
FRC’s match against Lassen was equally impressive. The team swept the Cougars in three quick games. FRC won 25-16, 25-15 and 25-16.
Ovitz led in attacking this game with 10 kills. Natalie Sarff and Phipps each had seven kills. Jackson was the team’s main passer with 22 assists.
Feather River will advance to the playoffs with its first game Nov. 26. Seeding takes place two days earlier. In the latest poll from the California Community Athletic Association, the Eagles were ranked ninth in the state.
