Five men from Portola were taken to Reno’s Renown Regional Medical Center early Sunday morning, Nov. 24, after their car crashed into a tree at a high speed near Graeagle.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver of the Ford Mustang, Gregory Ginochio, 25, was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Ginochio and his passengers — Cody Wilkinson, 27, Razil Ruiz, 21, Chance Ohle, 20, and Thomas Remington, 26 — were airlifted to Renown with serious injuries.

Wilkinson had to be extricated from the car by emergency responders.

The CHP reported the crash happened about 1:45 a.m. after the men left the Mohawk Tavern and headed southbound on Highway 89.

The car reportedly traveled through Graeagle at a high speed. Ginochio was unable to keep the car on the road as the road turned slightly left, south of Yonkalla Trail.

The right-side tires entered a ditch and the car collided with a large pine tree. The impact caused four of the men to be separated from their seats and smash into the inside compartment of the car. It is not known whether the men were wearing seatbelts.

A passerby witnessed the crash and called 911.

The crash is still under investigation.
