These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Quick fix: A plumbing problem is forcing the Plumas Unified School District to move its headquarters to the former probation building.
  • Lesser charges: A former Chester Public Utility District general manager pleaded guilty to reduced charges last month in connection with unauthorized use of a district credit card at a Reno strip club.

Mohawk Community Resource Center welcomes new coordinator

Heidi Rose, a resident of the Mohawk Valley, has recently been hired as the coordinator of the Mohawk Community Resource Center.

Rose has a background in community organizing, office management, volunteer recruitment and coordination, and event planning. From an early age she has volunteered with various organizations and believes that volunteers are “the heart of an organization.”

While new to the area, Rose is very committed to community and understands how important MCRC is to community support and growth. “I am thrilled to be living in Plumas County and excited to be a part of MCRC. There is a very strong community of volunteers and patrons at the center, and so many great classes. I look forward to working with the community to bring even more programs and patrons to the center,” says Rose.

The Mohawk Community Resource Center offers many functions and services to the Mohawk Valley community. These include classes (computer, digital camera, bridge, art, etc.), exercise classes (Pilates, yoga and low impact), a bereavement support group, line dancing, weekly senior lunches and several social events.

The coordinator can assist individuals and families with special needs through referrals and direct assistance, as MCRC is a part of the larger nonprofit Plumas Rural Services. A lending library, Internet access and computers are available to the public. The center also functions as a beautiful meeting space for Eastern Plumas County, with a large conference area and kitchen, and is available for use by other agencies and for rent by private parties for banquets, special events and meetings.

MCRC is located next to The Barn at the intersection of highways 70 and 89.

MCRC is open Monday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and for scheduled programs and activities. The center will be closed the month of January except for scheduled programs.

Despite continuing decreases in outside funding support, the MCRC advisory board has worked with local residents and businesses that support the resource center to engage the community in several successful annual fundraisers. These include the Taste of Mohawk, Ladies Tea in the High Sierra, Fall Into Fashion Show, Parking Lot Sale and a community Spaghetti Feed. The center also holds an annual sponsorship drive in late autumn.

Those interested in more information about the resource center and/or how to provide a tax-deductible donation to support its activities are invited to call 836-0446, email hrose@plumasruralservices.org, or visit the PRS website at www.plumasruralservices.org.
