Local baker to make television appearance

When local baker Traci Downey watched “Good Day Sacramento” last month, she had no idea what would happen next.

The show she saw featured a segment titled “I Made This,” during which viewers were invited to send in photos of their own creations. Traci, who specializes in custom cakes, submitted a photo of a Barry Manilow sculpture that she had made playing a piano-themed cake. 

Though the photo didn’t air during the segment, Traci received a call from the producers the following morning, asking if she would appear on a broadcast.

Traci is scheduled to appear on the morning television show Feb. 11 for a segment featuring her elaborate cake decorations. “Good Day Sacramento” airs at 9 a.m. on Channel 31.

They asked her to bring several cakes and toppers, all of which were to be romantically themed in advance of Valentine’s Day.

Because each cake and topper requires several hours of work, Traci began working immediately. 

“Perhaps I have been overly ambitious,” Traci said late last week as she worked on fondant petals for one cake. “I still have so much to do.”

Traci plans to bring seven cakes and sculpted toppers, including a seven-tier wedding cake as well as a white ruffle cake.


Traci works out of her East Quincy home, where stainless steel mixers and shelves of cake decorating items dominate her kitchen.

Traci is excited about her Feb. 11 television appearance. She and her husband, Mark, will drive to Sacramento the night before to ensure that they arrive at the studio early enough to set up the cakes, one of which she will work on during the segment.

Traci has even arranged to use their hotel’s kitchen to bake her signature cinnamon rolls to take to the crew of “Good Morning Sacramento.” 

When asked if she was nervous about appearing on television, Traci said, “No; just overwhelmed.” 

The petals on this wedding cake require several hours of work. Each is crafted from fondant, an edible frosting that can be molded into intricate decorations. This is one of the cakes that Traci will display when she makes her television appearance on “Good Day Sacramento” next week.
