Chester takes third at tournament

 The Chester wrestling team held its 37th annual tournament Friday and Saturday, Dec. 4-5.
    There were a total of 15 teams in attendance, with approximately 100 wrestlers competing. The Chester team competed well, coming in third place with 122 team points.
    Chico (253 points) and Lassen (126 points) came in first and second place, respectively.

    For the first time, Chester placed ahead of one of the Northern Section’s power houses, Modoc. Modoc had 32 wrestlers covering all 14 weight classes, while Chester only had 10 wrestlers, eight of whom made it to the semifinal matches.
    Of Chester’s 10 wrestlers, one is a senior, four are juniors, four are sophomores and one is a freshman.
    The only other Plumas County School to compete was Quincy High School, which placed eighth with 45.5 points.
    Quincy’s Cody Pack won first place at 135 pounds, and Cameron Diaz placed second at 160 pounds.
    Chester’s top finishers were Clayton Buchanan at 103 pounds and Matt Rosenthal at 152 pounds, who each took second place.
    Cameron Leary at 112 pounds, Dylan Ruffer at 119 pounds, Tyler Roberts at 125 pounds, Westley Ruffer at 160 pounds and Aron McCulloch at 171 pounds, all finished in third place in their respective weight classes.
    Rounding out Chester’s team were Danny Hulsey at 130, Matt Staggs at 135 and Chris Sexton at 140.
    Chester travels to Alturas for its second tournament of the season Dec. 12.
