The Chester High School girls’ basketball team claimed second place at the Modoc Tournament Dec. 17-19, winning their first two games before dropping their final match. This improved Chester to 7-4 overall, after a full preseason schedule.
“I feel really good about our team,” said Chester coach Joe Gilmour. “I’m proud of the girls. They’re playing really hard, and I’m happy with where we’re at right now.”
The Lady Volcanoes opened with a 60-24 win over Modoc Thursday, holding the Braves scoreless through the first quarter.
All 11 Chester players scored. Taylor Labosky totaled 14 points, followed by MacKenzie Lee with 10 and Natalie Peterson with eight.
Hailey Wilkerson grabbed 12 rebounds for the Volcanoes, and Abbey Schmidt grabbed eight.
Labosky snagged seven steals and Seyonna Hedrick nabbed five. Hedrick also delivered four assists.
Friday against Tulelake, Chester recovered from an 11-19 first quarter to get within two at halftime.
The Volcanoes took over in the third quarter by outscoring Tulelake 18-5, and then held on for a 60-52 victory.
Wilkerson earned 15 points and 16 rebounds for Chester. Labosky tallied 14 points and five steals. Lee registered 11 points, and Abbey Schmidt captured nine points and 11 rebounds. Hedrick recorded seven points and four assists.
Chester’s one loss came Saturday against Lakeview. Trailing 43-19 at halftime, the Volcanoes lost 65-52, after outscoring Lakeview by 11 points in the second half.
Labosky racked up 28 points, five steals, seven rebounds and three assists. Lee netted 10 points. Wilkerson pulled in 14 rebounds.
The Volcanoes open their league schedule at home against Quincy Thursday, Jan. 15.
