California Gold Mush Lake Davis Sled Dog and Snowshoe Races are still on for Feb. 26-28, but after surveying the racecourse, organizers have moved the staging area to Camp 5 at a slightly higher elevation.
The race staging area has been moved to the backup location at the Camp 5 turnoff at Lake Davis, accessed by West Street in Portola, until further notice. Fillipini Flat area has melted out and trails from that area are in poor shape.
Organizers need strong, able-bodied volunteers who can take specific instructions well. Volunteers under 18 must have parental/guardian consent. All minors will have adult supervision. Call 832-5577 to volunteer; leave your name, phone number and job preference, if you have one.
Dog handler training will be held Friday, Feb. 26, at Portola City Park from 2:30-5 p.m. Volunteers may arrive anytime during that time period, but not later than 4:30 p.m. to get proper training for assisting with the dog teams. This is exciting but physically demanding work so be prepared.
Saturday demonstrations at the Chalet View will continue as planned.
Event and trail updates can be accessed at CaliforniaGoldMush.com.
