The Portola and Quincy baseball teams met for the first time this season at the Winters Tournament last Friday, April 9, with Portola winning 4-3.

The game was not a league match, but the one-run victory indicates the Feather River League could be closely contested this season.
Two weeks earlier, the Portola Tigers posted a one-run win over Chester in their league opener. The Chester Volcanoes were coming off an 11-6 win over Quincy in their league opener the day before.

In the non-league game between Portola and Quincy last Friday, the Tigers got on the board first with one run in the top of the second inning, but then Quincy tied the match with one run in the bottom of the third.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Portola again took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth. With Portola leading 2-1, the sixth inning also went scoreless.

The Tigers added two runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a three-run lead. Not giving up, Quincy also scored two runs in the seventh, but Portola got out of the inning with a one-run win.

Portola finished with five hits and five errors in the game. Quincy recorded eight hits and three errors.

Clinton Morris was Portola's winning pitcher. Morris went six and two-thirds innings against 30 batters and threw 83 pitches.

Morris struck out four batters and walked one, while giving up eight hits and one earned run.

Billy Broad came in as the closer for Portola and got the final out of the game with seven pitches against two batters, giving up no hits.

On offense, Broad delivered three hits and one RBI for the Tigers. Piero Selvaggio claimed one hit and two RBIs, and Morris added one hit.

Portola's four runs were scored by Dillon Soares, Les Carr, Jarrod Fleisher and Klint Williams. Broad and Fleisher each captured two stolen bases.

The statistics for the Quincy Trojans were not available at press time.

The Tigers are scheduled to travel to Chester this Thursday, April 15. Quincy is slated to go to Big Valley Friday, April 16.
