5/19/2010 - Are you ready to enjoy the great outdoors? The Lassen National Forest announces that most of its 43 campgrounds will be open to kick off the beginning of the 2010 camping season on Memorial Day weekend.Eagle Lake Gallatin Marina parking area and restrooms will be open Saturday, May 15, along with Christie, Eagle and Merrill campgrounds. Gallatin Marina Store will be open Saturday, May 22. Aspen, West Eagle Group and Christie Day Use area will tentatively open by May 21, due to maintenance activities. Call 825-3454 for updates.
Rocky Knoll, Silver Bowl, Crater Lake, Butte Creek and Bogard campgrounds are not open yet, as they are not accessible due to snow.
Almanor campgrounds not accessible due to snow include Battle Creek, Benner, Domingo Springs, Hole-in-the-Ground and Warner. Almanor South and Gurnsey are unavailable to reserve until the weekend of May 21, due to snow removal activities.
With the beginning of the camping season just starting, the Forest Service would like to remind campers to be safe, be courteous to nature and their camping neighbors.
Remember to always be prepared for sudden changes in weather, have enough food and water, and to always put out your campfire before leaving.
As a reminder, the Temporary Forest Order for Motor Vehicle restrictions is still in effect until we receive the Motor Vehicle Use Map for public use. This is the map that will implement our Travel Management Decision, signed last January. Stay on roads and trails, as cross-country travel with motor vehicles is prohibited.
Once the MVUM is published, that will be the guiding document for motorized travel on roads and trails. The availability of the MVUM will be announced soon.
Most of the Lassen National Forest campgrounds are on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited reserved campsites are available at Hat Creek, Lake Almanor and Eagle Lake campgrounds. All group sites at Gurnsey, Lake Almanor, Hat Creek and Eagle Lake are available by reservation. To make reservations, call (877)444-6777 or go to recreation.gov.
Brochures with maps and information on all campsites and recreation features of the area are available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., from Lassen National Forest offices in Susanville, Chester and Fall River Mills. Old Station Visitor Center, at the junction of Highway 44 and 89, will be open May 29, 8:30 a.m. – 4 p.m., seven days a week.
