Fishing Report for the week of 7/28/2010

Frenchman Lake

Weather has been excellent for fishing this past week.

Mary Putnam of Trinidad caught a 17-inch rainbow trout using nightcrawlers while trolling near Turkey Point.

Best time to fish is early morning. In the afternoon you need to go at least 20 - 30 feet deeper.

Fishermen have been using nightcrawlers, PowerBait, marshmallows and various lures of green or yellow, and medium or large in size.

Lake Davis

As of July 23, the fishing at Lake Davis is OK.

If you're trolling, then the Dick Nite is doing well. The pink sock eye slammer is also a hit. Watch out for weeds, they seem to be a problem right now.

The damsels are still around so watch for them. Shore fishing is still a hit or miss. When the damsels hatch, you can find it hard to land any fish.

The nightcrawlers and PowerBait are still doing well.

Lake Almanor

For bank fishing, try fishing the jetties in Prattville and the usual Hamilton Branch with SW10 Kastmasters or nightcrawlers. Crickets are working also, catching browns and rainbows of decent size. The dam might be a good spot.

For boat fishing, trollers are taking fish with red/gold Speedy Shiners and various Rapalas - add carp spit or trophy trout. Go down 10 - 30 feet along the east or west shores for good-sized browns and rainbows. There have been many excellent reports by the dam for salmon with anchovy tails (sardines) with size #1 or #2 octopus hook a few cranks off the bottom.

Smallmouth is picking up as the weather improves at the points and drop-offs all around the lake with various rubber worms and maybe a brush hog. Also try crickets on a size 10 baitholder with 3/0 split shot 12" from your hook.

For fly fishing, at Hamilton Branch try Woolly Buggers. At Almanor, use pond smelt and caddis. Try Cooper Johns at Deer Creek and streamer patterns at Butt Lake. For Feather, River, use stoneflies. On rivers and streams, try crickets, salmon eggs, worms and Panther martins.

The Hex hatch is happening on Almanor and the good spot by the powerhouse on Butt Lake is now open. The powerhouse is reported running. On Eagle Lake, try Eagle's Nest and Wildcat area with a bobber and a nightcrawler. There have been some good reports.
