The Feather River College women’s soccer team hosted the Shasta College Knights Oct. 26, and the Knights walked away with a 3-2 conference victory.

The opening half of the match looked promising for the Lady Eagles, as they jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Sage Clark opened the scoring with a breakaway goal just eight minutes into the match.

Twenty-two minutes later, Quincy local Blanca Ruiz was assisted by Madeline Ramos and picked up her third goal of the season.

With a 2-0 halftime lead, the Lady Eagles felt comfortable. But no lead is safe, and 2-0 may be the most dangerous lead in soccer. Momentum can shift quickly, and Tuesday afternoon it did.

Ten minutes into the second half Shasta was awarded a corner kick and converted a header into a goal.

Shasta tied the match 23 minutes later and found the eventual game winner in the final 10 minutes.

Eagles keeper and Portola native, Kayla Healey, came out for a ball but was chipped over for the match winner.

“Kayla has come a long way as a keeper, and she had an outstanding day, making 10 saves for us,” said FRC coach Don Williams. “We are so proud of her efforts, as we are of all of our women. They never gave up or stopped fighting.”

Redwoods 4, FRC 1

Golden Valley Conference leaders College of the Redwoods came to Quincy Oct. 22, and defeated the Lady Eagles 4-1.

The FRC women were ready for the conference leaders and played very well, outshooting the Corsair’s 19-7.

“Feather River’s a good team,” said Redwoods coach Chris Gernand.

“It seemed like every shot they took went in, while we hit the post and just missed wide all day,” said Williams. “This was the best soccer we played all year, and just could not get the results.”

Redwoods erupted for four first-half goals, while Gaby Naranjo contributed her third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.

The second half saw the FRC women dominate possession and get off 11 shots, but none fell into the net.
