The 39th annual Chester Invitational Wrestling Tournament attracted 20 high school teams from Northern California and Nevada last Friday and Saturday, Dec. 3-4.

Chico won the tournament, followed by Fernley in second place and Chester in third.

The Chester Volcanoes are again being led by long-time coach Tom Maumoynier, who retired several years ago, but generously picked up the torch again after former Chester coach Tom Rogers was hired as the wrestling coach at Lassen College this season.

The Portola High School wrestling team, in its first year back, finished in 14th place overall.

Chester had six wrestlers who won medals, giving the Volcanoes 136 points overall for the third-place trophy.

Clayton Buchanan won first place for Chester in the 112-pound weight division.

Westly Ruffer (189 pounds), Aron McCulloch (171 pounds) and Dylan Ruffer (130 pounds) each earned a second place for the Volcanoes.

Chester's Danny Hulsey claimed third place in the 140-pound weight division, and Chris Sexton took fourth in the 145-pound weight class.

For Portola, Klint Williams registered a fourth-place finish in the 160-pound weight class.

The Chester Volcanoes will travel to Alturas this weekend to compete in the Northeastern Classic.
