Bucks Lake Lodge Reconstruction Project

Plumas National Forest

Mt. Hough Ranger District

Plumas County, California

Opportunity to Comment on Bucks Lake Lodge Reconstruction Project

The Plumas National Forest, Mt. Hough Ranger District, is preparing an Environmental Assessment for the Bucks Lake Lodge Reconstruction Project. The proposal is to reconstruct the main building of the Bucks Lake Lodge, which burned down in January of 2010. The Lodge is located in T. 23 N., R. 7 E., Section 3, on the Quincy-Oroville Highway (Co. Rd 414) near Bucks Lake. The Bucks Lake Lodge is under a term Special Use Permit and includes separate cabins, a motel and the lodge itself which consisted of a bar, restaurant and small store. The reconstructed Lodge building would be located in the same area as the previous building, using the same septic and leach field and the same water system, but may have a slightly different footprint. The Lodge would consist of a restaurant, a bar and a small store and would be approximately 1,400 - 2,000 square feet in size.

Reconstruction of the Lodge would provide the permittee the means to meet the terms and conditions of the current Special Use Permit, which allows the operation and maintenance of the lodge and includes a restaurant, a bar and a small store. Reconstructing the Lodge would provide an important service to the recreating public in the Bucks Lake area.

The project area is located on the permitted area where the old Bucks Lake Lodge was situated and involves less than one acre, including areas to stage construction materials. Ground disturbing activities could include digging out a basement, preparing the ground for the building foundation, compacting or paving pathways and parking areas, and using an area for staging materials and equipment.

At this stage of our planning, we are asking for comments and concerns about this project. Your knowledge of the area is of great value and will help us with project design and analysis. Comments will be used to identify issues and develop alternatives to the proposed action. To assist the Forest Service in identifying and considering issues and concerns on the proposed action, comments should be as specific as possible.

How to Comment and Timeframe

In order for your comments to be incorporated most effectively, we would appreciate receiving them by January 5, 2010. Your comments should be forwarded to Peggy Gustafson, Public Service Staff, Mt. Hough Ranger District, 39696 Highway 70, Quincy, CA 95971, (530) 283-0555. Comments may be (1) mailed; (2) hand delivered between the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., weekdays; (3) faxed to (530) 283-1821; or (4) electronically mailed to Please indicate the name "Bucks Lake Lodge Reconstruction Project" on the subject line of your email. Comments submitted electronically must be in rich text format (.rtf), plain text (.txt), or Word (.doc).

Comments received, including the names and addresses of those who comment, would be considered part of the public record on this proposal and would be available for public inspection (Authority: 40 CFR 1501.7 and 1508.22; Forest Service Handbook 1909.15, Section 21).
