FRC womens' basketball off to a good start

Heather Hamilton made 10 of 12 shots to total 26 points and 18 rebounds in FRC’s 69-65 win last Friday.

In their first game back after winter break, the Feather River College women's basketball team earned a 69-65 victory at home against Porterville last Friday, Jan. 7.

"We needed that," said FRC coach Haley White. "It started 2011 on a good note."

The FRC Golden Eagles fell behind by 13 points in the first half, but found their focus in the second half to register the 4-point win.

"We were excited to play, but we weren't focused and came out flat," said White. "After I encouraged our players at halftime to limit turnovers and make good shot selections, we came out and pecked away at [Porterville's] lead."

Feather River sophomore Heather Hamilton made 10 of 12 shots from the floor to finish with 26 points, 18 rebounds and three steals.

"We had key plays from Heather," said White. "She really didn't miss, so we fed her the ball. She played great."

Brittany Hill drained 14 points for the Golden Eagles, making two 3-pointers and going 4-for-4 from the free-throw line.

Kelly Hernandez captured 11 points and seven rebounds for FRC, shooting 5-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Feather River was originally scheduled to play Fresno City College Friday at 7 p.m., following a game between Porterville and Siskiyous at 5 p.m.

However, Siskiyous was delayed by an icy mishap on the drive up, so FRC ended up playing Porterville two hours earlier.

The Golden Eagles made up their game with Fresno the next day. Fresno, the fifth-ranked team in the state, defeated FRC 106-40.

FRC's next home game is Wednesday, Jan. 19, against Siskiyous. The women's game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game.
