At 5:37 p.m., May 3, Chester Fire Assistant Fire Chief Nick Dawson said, "The Susanville Inter-Agency Fire Center reports that the smoke inundating the Lake Almanor Basin is from a 300 acre controlled burn in the Hat Creek area." The north winds are bringing the smoke directly over the mountains and coating the Lake Almanor Basin. Visibility becomes challenged from approximately 2 miles east of Plumas County Road A-13 and through the community of Chester. The smoke is the densest in the back bay of Lake Almanor near the Last Chance Campground.
