75 YEARS AGO..........1936
The Lake Almanor Inn, store and building was destroyed by fire at midnight Sat. The main building which houses the dining room and hotel was saved. The store carried a full stock at the time of the fire. Loss was estimated at more than $10,000. A bucket brigade system extinguished the blaze that spread from the store.
50 YEARS AGO.....1961
John N. Bailey, formerly of Portola, has become editor and publisher of the Greenville Record and Chester Progressive this week. The new publisher is a graduate of Portola High School and Sacramento State College and is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Bailey, the publishers of the Portola Reporter.

Nine young ladies will compete for the title of Plumas County Fair Sweetheart of the Mountains including: Dena Griffith of Chester, Maria Moctezuma of Portola, Rebecca Snodgrass of Taylorsville, Shelinda Skemp of Caribou, Dawn Hanson of Spring Garden, Amy Cunningham, Rhonda Kanski, Michelle Miller and Nicole McQuarrie, all of Quincy. (Note: Maria Moctezuma was crowned the winner with runner-up Dena Griffith.)

This years Plumas County Fair theme is "Fun in the Sun in Two Thousand and One". Red and Mildred West of Quincy will be the fair parade Grand Marshalls.
It is the end of the line for Greyhound bus service in Plumas County after 18 months of averaging less than three passengers per trip.
The High Sierra Music Festival donated some 30,000 square foot rolls of sod to be laid at the Dame Shirley Plaza in Quincy that was used at the fairgrounds during the 4-day festival.
