Has Levels of Uranium Above the
Drinking Water Standard
Our water system recently violated a drinking water standard. Although this is not an emergency, as our customers, you have a right to know what you should do, what happened, and what we are doing to correct this situation.
What happened?
We are required by state regulations to test our water for certain radioactive elements. The maximum contaminant level (MCL) for uranium in drinking water as determined by the state is 20 pCi/L. We completed quarterly uranium sampling of Delleker Well 2 on the following dates: January 4, 2010; April 13, 2010; July 13 and 27, 2010; and July 25, 2011. The Running Annual Average uranium concentration for these samples is 20.8-pCi/L. Therefore, Well 2 produces water that exceeds the uranium Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL) of 20 pCi/L.
What should I do?
¥ You do not need to use an alternative water supply (e.g., bottled water).  
¥ This is not an immediate risk.  If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing uranium in excess of the MCL over many years may have kidney problems or an increased risk of getting cancer.
¥ If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor.
What is being done?
Well 2 has been taken off line and only Well 1 is in use. We are beginning quarterly monitoring of both wells as of December 1, 2011. The District is currently working with an engineer to evaluate alternative water sources and measures to decrease the threat of uranium above the MCL.
