Chester wins Mountain Pride

The Chester High School boys’ basketball team went 3-0 to win first place at the 13th annual Chester/Lake Almanor Mountain Pride basketball tournament Dec. 8 – 10.

Playing in their home gymnasium, the Volcanoes opened with a  65-40 victory over East Nicolaus Thursday. The next night, Chester defeated Big Valley 77-38, and then the Volcanoes beat Burney 71-17 Saturday.

In the girls’ division, Chester took third place with a 43-35 comeback victory against Burney Saturday. Before that, the Lady Volcanoes lost 51-36 to East Nicolaus Thursday and 43-35 to Big Valley Friday.

Each of Chester’s junior varsity teams went winless.

Topher Taylor was named the Most Valuable Player in the boys’ varsity division. Teammates Dylan Schriver, Micah Bondon and Jacob Angelis were selected as all-tournament players.

For the varsity girls, Chester’s Kelsey Wilkenson, Alissa Murphy, Brittany Mattingly and McKenna Taylor were named to the all-tournament team.

Junior varsity all-tourney selections went to Chester’s Edwin Perez and Jeremiah White for the boys, while Miranda Lemons and Victoria Reyes were chosen for the girls.
