Water quality notice
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR DRINKING WATER
The Plumas Eureka Community Services District Domestic Water System Has Levels of Arsenic Above the Federal Drinking Water Standard
Our domestic water system recently violated the new federal drinking water standard for arsenic. Although this is not an emergency, you have the right to know what happened, what you should do, and what we are doing to correct this situation.
The USEPA standard, enacted in January 2006, lowered the maximum contaminant level (MCL) of arsenic from 0.050 milligrams per liter (mg/l) to 0.010 mg/I. We routinely monitor for the presence of drinking water contaminants throughout the year. Our results indicate the 2011 fourth quarter average (Oct,Nov,Dec) for Well #2 was 0.0137 mg/l, which is above the current federal standard.
What should I do?
¥ You do not need to use an alternative water supply (e.g., bottled water).
¥ This is not an emergency. If it had been, you would have been notified immediately. However, some people who drink water containing arsenic in excess of the MCL over many years may experience skin damage or circulatory system problems, and may have an increased risk to getting cancer.
¥ If you have other health issues concerning the consumption of this water, you may wish to consult your doctor.
What is being done?
PECSD is continuing to work with Plumas GeoHydrology and Steve's Well Drilling to deepen the test well on Evergreen Circle to determine if there is a suitable water source with arsenic levels below the Federal standard. The deepening of the well started in September 2011 and continued through December. Site conditions and cold weather have slowed the drilling however; we do anticipate having a project report by the spring of 2012 that will identify what course of action PECSD will pursue to bring our drinking water into compliance with the Federal arsenic standard.
