The Feather River College Fish Hatchery received Outdoor Nation’s Take Me Fishing Award earlier this month through the efforts of Zach Parks’ Project Fish.
The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation funded the $2,500 award that will help Plumas County’s foster youth go fishing.
Intended to introduce local youth to the outdoors, participants meet every Saturday afternoon from early March through May 15, depending on weather.
Parks said Project Fish is one of 10 such winners annually. The project uses peer and adult mentors and a combination of lectures on outdoor ethics, stewardship and ecology through fishing activities.
Parks previously ran a similar program through the Sierra Nature Conservancy until funding ran out.
He said the program is limited to 20 youth referred by various community groups.
