Opportunity to Comment on
Four Mining Proposals
The Plumas National Forest is initiating a 30-day scoping period for four mining Plans of Operations on the Feather River Ranger District. Mining activity was first authorized under the 1872 Mining Law. This, along with subsequent regulations, require the Forest Service respond to mining Plans of Operations and ensure operations are conducted in a manner to minimize adverse environmental impacts on Forest Service system lands.
Larry Salhaney has proposed placer operations on the Jim Dandy claim, which is located on Poorman Creek, west of Harrison Flat. The Jim Dandy claim is located in T22N, R10E, Section 2. His operation will include use of a backhoe or small excavator to remove overburden, diversion of the stream, creation of a settling pond, use of a sluice box wash plant, and occupancy of the claim while operating. All necessary State permits will be obtained. The Plan of Operations would be approved for five years.
Timothy Glidewell has proposed placer operations on his Sacketts Gulch claim north of St. Louis. The Sacketts Gulch claim is located in T21N, R9E, Section 1. His operation will include use of a dozer to remove the topsoil, use of a metal detector and dry washer, use of a non-system access road, and occupancy of the claim while operating.
Larry Brockman has proposed operations on his Geraldine claim near Old Forbestown. The Geraldine claim is located in T19N, R6E, Section 3. His underground exploration would require use of a non-system access road and parking pad near the existing mine entrance.
Mike Bone has proposed operations on his Phred View claim near Quartz Point. The Phred View claim is located in T23N, R10E, Section 20. He proposes to use hand tools to remove material from a quartz outcropping, a metal detector, and dry washer. He would occupancy the claim in tents and trucks during operating periods. Water from a nearby spring would be collected for personal use.
The public is encouraged to take part in the environmental analysis process for these mining proposals, by submitting written or oral comments on the proposal or visiting with Forest Service officials. Comments must be received days within the 30-day comment period and may useful in the preparation of the environmental document for this project. Additional information can be obtained by contacting Donna Duncan, project leader, at 530-534-6500.

Comments received, including the names and addresses of those who comment, would be considered part of the public record on this proposal and would be available for public inspection (Authority: 40 CFR 1501.7 and 1508.22; Forest Service Handbook 1909.15, Section 21).
