Native plant group holds nearby field trips

The Mount Lassen Chapter of the California Native Plant Society is hosting the following outings. Alternate meeting sites can usually be arranged. For more information, check the chapter website at mountlassen.cnps.org.

 

Humbug Summit Check-Listing

Friday, Aug. 3

This is a field trip focusing of less hiking and more plant identifying. Botanically interested folk of all skill levels who want to improve their keying skills are invited. Participants will visit roadside meadows and forests, culminating with the area of Humbug Summit, at 6,714 feet the highest spot in Butte County. It is reached via a good dirt road.

Participants will see a good diversity of primarily native species with a goal to produce a list of everything they identify. Bring water, lunch, insect/sun protection and money for ride-sharing. Meet at the Chico Park & Ride west lot ready to leave at 9 a.m. The tour will return around 5 p.m. Email Robert at rdfischer@comcast.net for more information.

 

Hat Lake to Paradise Meadow

Lassen Volcanic National Park

Sunday, Aug. 5

Meet at the Chico Park & Ride west lot ready to leave at 8:30 a.m. to drive to the trailhead in Lassen Park. Participants will climb 1.4 miles to Paradise Meadow at 7,200 feet. Wear sturdy shoes and bring lunch, water, sun/insect protection and money for ride-sharing. Organizers expect a wide variety of flowers, including columbine, lupine, monkshood, penstemon and bog orchid. Call Wes at 342-2239 for an alternate meeting place.

 

Caribou Wilderness

Sunday, Aug. 12

Meet at Chico Park & Ride west lot at 8 a.m. with lunch, water, sun/insect protection and money for ride-sharing. Caribou Wilderness borders Lassen Park. The group will hike about 4.5 miles on an easy loop past several beautiful little lakes and open lodgepole-fir-pine forest at 6,800 feet. Call Gerry at 893-5123 for an alternate meeting site.

 

Rare Plant Treasure Hunt

Little Dry Creek Unit, Upper Butte Basin Wildlife Area

Saturday, Aug. 18

The group will look for the beautiful woolly rose mallow along Butte Creek east of Gridley. Meet at Chico Park & Ride west lot ready to leave at 8:30 a.m. Email Ron at rcoley64@comcast.net to RSVP.
