Four vie for three City Council seats

Three incumbents are seeking to retain their positions on the Portola City Council, but a challenger hopes to unseat one of them.

Restaurant manager Michelle Gault is challenging councilmen John Larrieu, Phil Oels and William Weaver, whose terms all expire in November. Earlier this year, Gault was unsuccessful in her bid to become a Plumas County supervisor.

Oels is the newest council member. He was elected to replace Dan Wilson, who was recalled in April.

Larrieu was elected to the City Council in 2002 and 2006. He lost his 2010 bid, but was appointed to fill the term vacated by Bill Kennedy.

Weaver was elected to the council in 2000, 2004 and 2008. He is seeking his fourth full term.

The remaining two council members, Mayor Juliana Mark and Curt McBride, are serving four-year terms that expire in 2014.

The four candidates will face each other in the November general election.

In addition to the City Council positions, Portola voters will be electing a treasurer. Christine Pearson is running for the seat unopposed.
