Calvin Ray Carlson, 81

Ricardo ‘Ric’ del Valle, 58

Jimmy Lee Crabtree, 68

Calvin Ray Carlson died July 17, 2012. He was an honest, caring and giving man who loved his family very much. And we all love and miss him very much.

Cal was born in Castlegate, Utah, Oct. 29, 1931. While he lived in Price and Helper, Utah, he and Mike Blanusa chased all of the Indians out of Utah. The family then moved to Portola in 1940. As a teenager he hayed at the ranches in Sierra Valley.

When he was in high school he met and eventually married the love of his life, Dorothy Goodin, Jan. 5, 1951, in Reno, Nev. He immediately left for Japan to serve in the Marines aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Princeton CV37. He returned Feb. 5, 1952, and when we asked him if he’d even gone to Korea he told us he’d never set foot off of the ship. The two began their married life when he returned and remained by each other’s side for the next 61 years. They had two children, Rick and Cathy Carlson.

He began working at Portola Propane and shortly after Dorothy was hired on as the bookkeeper. They both worked there for the next 44 years. Cal and Dorothy enjoyed many activities such as bowling, golfing and yearly vacations, a tradition that continued with their grandchildren Calena, Julia and Brandon.

Cal was very active in local events and organizations. He was a past president of the Rotary Club International and received the Paul Harris Fellows Award. He was a member of the Portola Volunteer Fire Department from 1956 to 1998. He rode with the PlumasCounty mounted posse and was a member of the Portola Booster Club. He also served on the Plumas County Fair Board.

After he retired he fulfilled his dream to golf every day, until his health prevented it.

He leaves behind his brother August Jay Carlson, of Clear Lake; sister-in-law Carol Carlson, of Yuba City; brother-in-law Dave and wife Judy Goodin, of Klamath Falls, Ore.; children Rick and Marian Carlson, of Graeagle, Cathy and David Mendershausen, of Reno; grandchildren Calena Carlson and Matt Long, Brandon and Kaileen Carlson, and Julia and Jacob Lynch, all of Reno; and great-grandchildren Kaylie, Madison, Hannah, Dustin, Chace, Andrew, Caleb and Page.

Cal was laid to rest with military honors July 23 at Shady Grove Cemetery in Portola. Manni Funeral Home of Portola was entrusted with arrangements.

Ricardo “Ric” del Valle, 58, of Twain, died of cancer July 13, 2012, at the Veterans Hospital in Reno, Nev.

He was born Aug. 17, 1953, in Santa Monica and had lived in Plumas County for 36 years.

Survivors include his wife, Kelly; brother, Jaime; numerous children and grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services and a potluck will be held Saturday, Aug. 18, 1 – 4 p.m. at the park across the street from the Twain Store. Memorial donations may be made to the local hospice.
