In a pair of public meetings, fire officials said they were getting the upper hand on the Chips Fire.
A meeting to discuss the Chips Fire was held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22, at Lake Almanor West Community Park.
“Chips Fire has gotten a lot of attention. It was the first fire to take off and is certainly not the last. It looks like it is going to be a very challenging year for us,” said Lawrence Crabtree, Deputy Plumas National Forest Supervisor.
The burnout operations conducted in the last week were successful. “Because of the burnout, the fire did not make it inside Canyon Dam,” said Team 4 Incident Manager Rocky Oplinger.
A second meeting was held at 9 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, to discuss the possibilities of lifting evacuations and road closures.
Oplinger was confident that controls in place over Highway 89 and Almanor would be lifted today. Prattville will also be assessed and is expected to be opened up today.
He is hopeful that the mandatory evacuations on Canyon Dam and Big Meadows can be lifted in another day or so.
When asked if it was safe for those under advisory and volunteer evacuations to start unpacking, Oplinger was so confident that he responded, “Please, unpack your stuff.”
“We should have everything except the south end contained by Aug. 23 and anticipate 40 percent containment at that time,” said
Oplinger.
Representatives from PG&E informed residents that power interruptions will continue until the fire is completely out and the smoke has had a chance to clear.
