These are the stories we are working on for this week's newspaper:
  • Image makeover needed: In the soon-to-be-released grand jury report, the jurors said the county’s Alcohol and Drug and Mental Health departments are suffering from a poor public image.
  • Help at the jail: The Board of Supervisors approved the sheriff’s request to hire four corrections officers, but not before reminding him the county is facing a $3 million budget problem.
  • Water disaster?: The state has already enacted emergency conservation measures. The county is thinking about declaring a local disaster as well.

Sierra Farmstead is hosting its annual Mother’s Day plant sale Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the lawn at Greenville High School.

Annuals, perennials, herbs, veggie starts, flower baskets, fruit trees and berries will be offered. There will also be plant starts from the Greenville High School Garden.

“Don’t forget a lovely hanging basket for Mom; after all, it is Mother’s Day weekend!” say organizers.

The proceeds benefit the Digging In Garden Education Program and the Greenville High School Garden.

The Digging In Education Program is a community-based program that makes hands-on garden and nutrition education possible for classes at Greenville and Quincy elementary schools.

Since 2010 the Digging In garden educators have been working with teachers to develop and lead garden lessons that engage students’ senses, reinforce the classroom curriculum and help students understand the connection between healthy food and healthy bodies.

The Mother’s Day Plant Sale is sponsored by Women’s Mountain Passages, Sierra Farmstead, Gray’s Flower Garden, California Sisters Nursery and the Greenville High School Garden.
