Woman searches for local men killed in Vietnam

Have you heard of any of these men?

Garry W. Catron, 1949 – 1968, Chester.

Michael L. Krom,1950 – 1969, Twain.

John S. Lewis, 1947 – 1969,California Hot Springs.

Larry D. Simpson, 1945 – 1969,Sloat.

Maui resident Janna Hoehn is looking for a picture of each man to send to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Hoehn has been hunting for pictures for the past three years. The search began in Maui, where she found photos for the 42 Maui residents who were killed during the Vietnam War. Then she tracked down the photos of the six who hailed from her hometowns of Hemet and San Jacinto in California. Her quest to find photos of all Californians killed in Vietnam led her to Plumas County.

She has already located a photo for W.K. Creason, 1949 – 1969, from Quincy, but is looking for the remaining four.

Recent research has uncovered a story about the death of Simpson, but no photo. At the time of his death, Simpson’s mother, Clara Hinds, lived in Sloat. His wife, Kathleen, and father, George, lived in Gridley. A sister, Linda Faith, resided in San Jose.

The Feather River Bulletin ran a front-page story of Michael Krom’s death July 24, 1969, and included a photo of him in uniform. However, the photo is a little grainy. His parents were listed as Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Martinson of Tobin; siblings included a sister, Betty Louise Krom, of Oakland; and three brothers, Richard and Burton Krom, both of McCloud, and Thomas Martinson, of Tobin.

“Could you stress that even if they don’t have a photo, if they know what school they attended or maybe know family members, it would really help?” Hoehn said via email.

Hoehn made a similar request late last year, but received no information. She remains hopeful that she will be successful with this effort.

Anyone who has information about the individuals named above should contact Hoehn at mauifloralelegance@gmail.com.
