A well-known Taylorsville man was killed after the all-terrain vehicle he was driving struck a deer and crashed Tuesday night, July 1.

John “Richard” McCutcheon, 76, died shortly after the 9:30 p.m. accident.

According to the California Highway Patrol, McCutcheon was riding his 2007 Polaris Sportsman ATV northbound on China Grade Road south of Arlington when a deer crossed in front of him.

The Polaris, which was traveling at an unknown speed, struck the deer and overturned.

The accident is still under investigation, according to the CHP.

McCutcheon was a regular contributor to Feather Publishing. Many of his photos were published in the newspaper and the yearly Plumas County Visitor’s Guide.
