These are a few of the stories you will find in this week's printed newspaper:
  • Ebola preparedness: Could a deadly virus with its roots in West Africa find its way to Plumas County? The county’s three hospitals are preparing, just in case.
  • Candidates speak: With elections just days away, candidates for local public offices took part in forums and submitted answers to questions from the newspaper.
  • Remembering Grace: The family of an FRC student who died earlier this month said they were overwhelmed by the community’s support after the college held a vigil to remember their daughter.

Plumas National Forest makes green firewood permits available

Additional green firewood permits are available for personal firewood cutting in the vicinity of Snake Lake near Quincy, according to local Forest Service officials. Special green, project-specific fuelwood permits are required, priced at $10/cord with a two-cord minimum.

“The first phase of the program was a success,” said Andy Hart, small sales forester for the Mt. Hough Ranger District of the Plumas National Forest. “Wood cutters did a good job of removing their wood and piling their debris.”
The trees are a mix of white fir, pine and cedar averaging 8 inches in diameter, and, if split, would be dry in time for next winter’s heating needs.
Woodcutters may only cut marked trees and must pile the needles and small limbs left behind. Cutters may not leave the road to scout for trees but may do so to pick up their cut firewood, provided there is no resource damage to the soil and surrounding vegetation.
The green firewood cutting area is along Snake Lake Road (National Forest System Road 24N27 and Plumas County Road 435) within T24N/T25N R 9E, Section 6.
Special green firewood permits and a cutting area map are available at the Mt. Hough Ranger District Office 39696 Highway 70, Quincy, CA, 283-0555, and on Thursdays and Fridays at the Greenville Work Center, 122 Hot Springs Road, Greenville, CA, 284-7126.
