These are a few of the stories you will find in this week's printed newspaper:
  • Ebola preparedness: Could a deadly virus with its roots in West Africa find its way to Plumas County? The county’s three hospitals are preparing, just in case.
  • Candidates speak: With elections just days away, candidates for local public offices took part in forums and submitted answers to questions from the newspaper.
  • Remembering Grace: The family of an FRC student who died earlier this month said they were overwhelmed by the community’s support after the college held a vigil to remember their daughter.

There are only nine days left until the Eastern Plumas Winter Snow Fest. The event is jam-packed with activities including the 15th annual Rotary Snowmobile Poker Run at Lake Davis and the historic longboard races in Johnsville.

Beginning Friday, Feb. 18, at Grizzly Creek Ranch, the Queen Scholarship Pageant will be held at 6 p.m. and includes dinner. Ticket prices are $10.  Sleigh rides will be offered starting at 7 p.m. and the evening will be wrapped up with a moonlight snowmobile ride at 8 p.m. at J&J’s Grizzly Store.

On Saturday, the Rotary Club of Portola will host the Snowmobile Poker Run. This event is a fundraiser for the Rotary Endowment, which provides scholarships to local children. Activities begin at 9 a.m. and last until 2 p.m. when a drawing will be held and awards  given. There is a $12 entry fee and last check-in is at 11 a.m.

Another event being held at 9:30 a.m. is the Snow Carnival Competition. Everything “snow” goes on here: snow angels, snowball tossing, snowman building, sledding and the ever-elusive sport of “snow bowling.” Each activity costs $3 per person to participate. Also on the schedule at 9:30 a.m. is the Eastern Plumas Snow Golf Tournament sponsored by the Plumas Pines Golf and Resort.  First tee time is 9:30 a.m. and fees are $10 for junior golfers, $25 for adults.

A cross-country skiing competition is available, as are snowshoe races and family-oriented triathlons and snow volleyball. The cost is $3 per event and $6 per team.

A day of sled dog demonstrations and rides, sleigh rides and snowmobile rides is open to the public between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. with a daily or weekend pass. Snowmobile rides, specifically, are $10.  Gumbas Pizzeria in Blairsden-Graeagle is sponsoring an air hockey tournament between 3 and 5 p.m.

The Western Pacific Railroad Museum is offering free caboose train rides to children under 3 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Families (two adults and children under 18) may ride for $10 and it’s $4 for adults and $2 for youth 4-18 years of age. The Portola Railroad Days Committee is having a fundraiser dinner starting at 5 p.m. until midnight at Memorial Hall for $5.   S’mores and non-alcoholic beverages are priced at $1. For those who want to try out their vocal talent, there will also be a  $3 karaoke contest.

On Sunday, Feb. 20, the Plumas-Sierra SnoJunkies Snowmobile Club is hosting a picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $10. Additionally, the Plumas Ski Club will host the longboard races in Johnsville and participation is free. Period dress, 16-foot-long skis and minimal downhill control are highly anticipated factors in these races. An after-party at Longboard’s Restaurant will follow between 2 and 5 p.m. in Graeagle and an awards ceremony presented by the Graeagle Plumas Alliance will begin at 6:30 p.m., the cost of which is $15.

If the weekend activities still haven’t been enough, the Western Pacific Railroad Museum will continue to offer caboose rides into Monday, Feb. 21, and a breakfast snowmobile ride is scheduled at J&J’s Grizzly Store in Portola. All in all, Winter Snow Fest 2011 promises to be a weekend of non-stop action!
